Economic Botany Section Dhakal, Akriti [1], Swatzell, Lucinda [2]. A comparison of nitrogen uptake abilities of two Zingiberales species. Ginger (Zingiber officinale) is a lucrative crop for Asian peoples and its culture is increasing in the United States. A cousin plant, Thalia dealbata, is a native plant indigenous to the southeastern United States that is cultivated for horticultural purposes. Both plants are of the same plant family (Zingiberales) and exhibit the same growth patterns and physiology. In addition, both plants exhibit aggressive nitrogen uptake capabilities. According to previous studies, Thalia dealbata has the potential to be used for nitrogen mitigation for agricultural runoff. Because both plants exhibit similar physiology, we propose to measure and compare Thalia dealbata and Zingiber officinale under the same conditions. If Zingiber officinale can perform sufficiently, it may offer nitrogen mitigation and a cash crop simultaneously. Broader Impacts:
