Systematics of Miconia sect. Calycopteris (Melastomataceae: Miconieae) with an emphasis on the Hispaniolan species.

A new section, Miconia sect. Calycopteris, is characterized; the clade includes 14 species, which are restricted to Cuba and Hispaniola. These species were previously not considered to be closely related, and have been placed within Calycogonium, Clidemia, Henriettella, Leandra, Miconia, and Ossaea. Section Calycopteris is a member of the morphologically diverse Caribbean clade of Miconieae, and its monophyly is supported by strongly 4-lobed ovaries and hypanthia, calyx teeth that are flattened parallel to the floral radii, and seeds with a distinctive, dark-colored and expanded raphe. Preliminary DNA-sequence data also support the group’s monophyly. Their inflorescences may be terminal or axillary and vary from lax to congested, several-flowered cymes to solitary flowers, with flowers actinomorphic to zygomorphic, calyx teeth rather short to very elongated, petals ranging from blunt to acute or acuminate, and stamens with or without appendages. Eight species occur on Hispaniola and all are endemic except for M. calycopteris, which also grows in eastern Cuba. The phylogenetic relationships, habitats, and geographical distributions of these species will be discussed. Section Calycopteris is most closely related to the Ossaea lima clade and the glabrate-domatial clade (i.e., Calycogonium glabratum and relatives).
