Diversity and Development in the Vitaceae - More than Wine Grapes Jones, Austin [1], Doughan, Benjamin [2], Gerrath, Jean [3], Kang, Julie [4]. Development of leaf shape in two North American native species of Ampelopsis (Vitaceae). The Vitaceae (grape family) is a large group of plants consisting of ~900 species and are found world-wide (Soejima and Wen, 2006). Despite the economic importance of cultivated grapes (Vitis vinifera L.) in both fruit and wine production, very little is known about its vegetative development, particularly in leaves. The genus Ampelopsis contains both simple and compound leafed forms, making it an appropriate genus in which to study leaf development. Our detailed morphological analysis shows that leaf lobing occurs early in both species. However, the developmental timing of these lobes quickly diverge. Leaf marginal serrations in A. cordata are formed by the P4 stage and resembles the mature leaf phenotype by this stage while leaf lobe development in A. arborea is prolonged up to the P7 stage of leaf development. Despite their early developmental similarities, the spatial and temporal pattern of simple and compound leaf development of these two closely related species of Ampelopsis diverge very early in leaf development, resulting in two very different mature leaf forms. Our study will be a key step in understanding both the evolution and development of leaf morphology in this important family. Broader Impacts:
