Ecological Section Kistenmacher, Michael [1], Gibson, Phil [2]. Bet-Hedging Through Heterocarpy: from a Predator Perspective. Heterocarpy, the production of structurally and functionally dissimilar fruits, is a well studied reproductive strategy that results in temporal and spatial bet hedging through the production of achenes that differ in dormancy and dispersal features. However, heterocarpy may also function to bet hedge against the risks posed by specialized seed herbivores through investing in seeds that differ in their susceptibility to being consumed. We present preliminary data of Schinia mortua (Noctuidae) oviposition behavior into heterocarpic capitula of Grindelia ciliata (Asteraceae) that address how this may influence plant fitness and provide insights on an unexplored aspect of heterocarpy.
