Conservation Biology Ehardt, Cassie [1], Gibson, Phil [2]. Establishment ecology of Alnus maritima, a rare riparian species. Alnus maritima has one of the most disjunct distributions in North America, with populations located in Maryland, Georgia and Oklahoma. In all populations, there is no evidence of new recruitment from seeds and adult populations appear to be declining. Alnus maritima subsp. oklahomensis has an S1 conservation rank, indicating it is critically imperiled in Oklahoma. We are investigating seed and seedling establishment at different seasons and locations, the influence of pre-planting disturbance, and the impact of symbiotic bacteria in establishment to develop a conservation management plan for A. maritima. Results to date have found that few seedlings survive after early summer planting, but seedlings from fall plantings have a higher likelihood of survival. Seed dormancy and germination studies suggest that time of dormancy loss are not optimal for survival of seedlings. Broader Impacts:
