Systematics Section/ASPT Carter, Benjamin E [1], Guilliams, Matt [2], Chen, Po-An [3], Li, Gary [3]. Diversification and biogeography of Ribes section Calobotrya (Grossulariaceae). Ribes (the currants and gooseberries) is a diverse genus of shrubs with ca. 200 species worldwide and centers of diversity in east Asia, western North America and the Andes mountains. As part of a larger ongoing project aimed at clarifying biogeography as well as current and ancient diversification in the genus, we present preliminary results from a western North American section, Calobotrya, a morphologically well-defined clade strongly supported by molecular data. Our current phylogenetic hypothesis based on ITS, ETS and psbA-trnH indicates that the section comprises two lineages that diverged before the onset of the Mediterranean climate in California; each of the two lineages has subsequently diversified into climatically different regions. The current analysis employs two fossil calibration points, and we discuss ongoing efforts employing morphometric data from extant and fossil specimens to further exploit the rich fossil history of Ribes in developing a more precise understanding of the biogeography of section Calobotrya and Ribes as a whole.
