Just some plain old Regulaviburnum: phylogenetic classification and character evolution based on a chloroplast genome phylogeny of Viburnum (Adoxaceae). Based on phylogenetic analyses of whole chloroplast genome data from 22 species of Viburnum and an expanded 10-gene dataset (chroloplast + ITS) of 136 species, we present a new phylogenetic hypothesis and classification for Viburnum. This entails the formal recognition of some previously proposed informal clade names, the re-circumscription of several other previously adopted names, and the recognition and naming of nine new clades. Node-based names are used where relationships appear to be resolved with confidence, while branch-modified node-based names are used in cases where relationships remain less clear. In light of these new results and findings from recent collection efforts, we will discuss the evolution of several traits in Viburnum including: inflorescence architecture, bud scales, and laminar trichomes and glands. In each case, discussing the character evolution of these traits is greatly enhanced by the ability to use clade-based names. This study serves as a concrete example of the thorough applications of modern phylogenetic nomenclature. Broader Impacts:
