Elucidating phylogenetic relationships and character state evolution in the lichen-forming lineage Trypetheliales (Dothideomycetes, Ascomycota). Here we present a detailed phylogeny of the primarily lichen-forming fungal order Trypetheliales (Dothideomycetes: Ascomycota). Our data demonstrate that a number of genera in this clade are not monophyletic, instead suggesting that an overemphasis has been placed on certain character state combinations, which do not reflect phylogeny. Patterns of ascospore septation, ostiole orientation and type of ascomatal aggregation appear evolutionarily labile, and are of limited utility for the circumscription of genera. Additionally, we present results examining the evolution and phylogenetic distribution of morphological diversity across this lineage. Broader Impacts:
