Systematics Section/ASPT Sharber, Wyatt [1], Whitlock, Barbara [2]. Two lineages of Ayenia (Malvaceae; Byttnerioideae) in the Caribbean. Ayenia has a wide distribution in the Americas and is especially diverse in warm, dry habitats. Nearly 20% of species diversity is in the Caribbean, thus Ayenia presents an excellent opportunity to study the biogeography of Caribbean taxa, including hypotheses of historical migration routes and origins of diversity. We reconstruct a molecular phylogeny of the genus using chloroplast data, focusing on Caribbean taxa. Preliminary results support previous findings that the current sectional classification leads to nonmonophyletic groupings. We find evidence for at least two lineages within the Caribbean: a clade of species from section Ayenia and a clade of species from sections Cybiostigma and Leiayenia. Relationships between Caribbean and mainland species are complex and will benefit from expanded sampling of mainland taxa. We discuss evidence for a tropical origin of Ayenia and potential migration through the Caribbean between North and South America. Broader Impacts:
