Gene family content of the ancestral angiosperm genome. The angiosperms (flowering plants) represent one of the greatest evolutionary radiations in the history of life on Earth. Comprising at least 350,000 living species, flowering plants have come to dominate every habitable terrestrial environment. Associated with the origin of flowers are a number of distinctive morphological features, including ovules enclosed in a carpel, double fertilization, and unique features of the vascular tissues. We leveraged the complete genome sequence of Amborella trichopoda, the earliest diverging lineage of flowering plants, in a comparative gene family analysis with 21 sequenced land plant genomes, plus transcriptome sequences from gymnosperms and other basal angiosperms, to identify novel gene lineages associated with the ancestral angiosperm. We also investigate the functions of gene lineages retaining paralogs that trace their origin back to the whole genome duplication event in the common ancestor of flowering plants (epsilon). Finally, we dissect the evolution of genes with known roles in floral development to understand the molecular basis of flower diversity. Broader Impacts:
