Teaching Section Mickle, James [1], Jordan, Chad [2], Wright, Donna [1]. Developing a Distance Education General Plant Biology Lab. A distance education section of an introductory plant biology course (PB 200: Plant Life) for mixed-majors was developed to reach nontraditional students. This asynchronous distance offering includes a required distance laboratory. Using the Moodle platform, students complete two on-line lectures weekly, quizzes and exams. There are eight hands-on labs: Plant Macromolecules, Growth & Development, Anatomy & Morphology, Biotechnology, Photosynthesis, Transport, Ecology, and Plant Diversity. Students receive a lab kit that we have developed and packaged. The kit contains supplies for each lab plus a list of materials needed for specific labs that can be found at home or at a grocery store. Protocols are provided for each lab; students submit hard copy write-ups with photographs of lab activities for grading. Multimedia specialists from the NCSU distance education program worked with course instructors, generating online pictorial flashcards, videos, and animations to supplement lectures and labs. Over three dozen learning objects were developed, including a stem secondary growth animation, a virtual slide viewer and numerous descriptive videos of plant species. New materials generated can be used in other on-campus courses and some materials are available worldwide. In three semesters, DE PB 200 has been enrolled by students from six states, and includes teachers, government employees, and students at other institutions that do not offer introductory plant biology courses.
