Using seed morphology to evaluate taxonomic and phylogenetic hypotheses in the Miconieae (Melastomataceae).

Seed morphology in the Melastomataceae is diverse and has long been used for systematic purposes. Recent studies of the neotropical tribe Miconieae have shown that seed morphology does not support generic circumscriptions, but in some cases it may be correlated with specific clades. In this study, the seed diversity of ca. 400 species of the tribe was documented with scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and 23 morphological characters were coded into a data matrix. The morphological data set was used to test different tree topological hypotheses using Bayes factor comparisons and Templeton tests; in particular, support for monophyly of the genera recognized in traditional classifications and clades identified in DNA phylogenetic reconstructions were assessed. Furthermore, Bayesian and maximum parsimony phylogenetic trees were estimated using chloroplast and nuclear DNA sequence data. The diversification history of seed morphological characters was traced, and randomization procedures were employed to test whether the morphological data showed phylogenetic signal. In addition, new preliminary data for nine anatomical characters was obtained from a subset of samples to gain insights into the homology of morphological features. The characteristics of the embryo (shape and curvature) and seed appendage were, among others, some of the features that showed more variation. These anatomical characters provide further evidence to understand seed diversification in the Miconieae.
