Effect of drought stress on the growth and development of Senecio cineraria.

Water stress is the major problem in agriculture as well as horticulture production and the ability to withstand such stress is of immense economic importance. Among ornamental plants, Senecio cineraria is an annual bedding plant with foliage beauty, used in urban landscape in the world. Knowledge of relative drought tolerance is important for selecting Senecio cineraria in landscape that persists under drought stress. A pot experiment was conducted to assess the morphological and physiological responses of Senecio cineraria to water deficit conditions. Four drought levels with 75 percent, 65 percent, 55 percent and 45 field capacity, along with control (100 percent field capacity) were maintained throughout the experiment. During the study several morphological and physiological parameters including shoot fresh and dry weight, root fresh and dry weight, root/shoot ratio, root and shoot length, photosynthetic characteristics, leaf firing percentage, leaf area, water potential, osmotic pressure, permanent wilting point, transpiration rate, stomatal conductance, leaf area index, CO2 concentration, Ci/ca ratio, leaf temperatures and water use efficiency etc. were measured. Results revealed that progressing water stress had highly significant effect on all morphological and physiological characters including number of leaves, leaf texture, leaf area, shoot length, fresh and dry weight of roots and shoots, root length, photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, leaf water potential etc. 45 percent field capacity was the least level where ornamental appearance of the plants was highly effected.
