Temporal population genetics of common ragweed across a disturbed landscape.

Ambrosia artemisiifolia (common ragweed; Asteraceae, Compositae) is a pioneer weed native to North America. Palynological records from sediment cores indicate that this species was uncommon before European colonization of North America. While settlers deforested the landscape on a massive scale, ragweed populations expanded dramatically, later becoming aggressive invasives with established populations in Europe, Australia, China, Japan, Russia and Israel. Toward the goal of directly comparing population genetic structure during intense anthropogenic disturbance, we sampled natural populations of A. artemisiifolia across its native range as well as historical populations from herbarium specimens collected up to 120 years ago. Spatial genetic clustering analysis of individuals genotyped at three intergenic chloroplast spacer regions and six nuclear microsatellite loci reveals weak phylogeographic structure that mirrors the pattern of historical agriculture density across the landscape. Ongoing work at the genomic level using reduced-representation libraries corroborates findings from traditional sequencing methods and increases our power to discriminate weak genetic clusters in the disturbed landscape.
