New generic combinations within Hedyotis-Oldenlandia complex (Rubiaceae) in Asia and the Pacific.

Hedyotis-Oldenlandia complex lies in the herbaceous tribe Spermacoceae of the fourth largest plant family, Rubiaceae. Members of this complex are distributed primarily in tropical and subtropical regions of the world. Historically, the genus Hedyotis and its related genera from the Hedyotis-Oldenlandia complex have been taxonomically problematic due to the use of inconsistent and overlapping characters in defining the genera. The recent molecular studies suggest that the complex itself is a paraphyletic group and be split into several smaller monophyletic units. In this presentation, we discuss the usefulness of fruit, seed and pollen features in the generic delimitations of these monophyletic groups revealed by our molecular phylogenetic study.
