Abstract Detail

Herbarium Digitization for Research, Teaching, and the Public

Ribbens, Eric [1].

Tracking the Global Distribution of Opuntia fragilis: Digitization Promises and Problems.

Opuntia fragilis (Nutt.) Haw. is a cactus with a wide North American distribution. Common in some parts of its range, it is rare or endangered in other areas. I searched online data sites across North America for information about herbarium specimens of Opuntia fragilis. I will analyze the search process, the nature and variation in the available results, and explore aspects such as identifying collections from the same location, duplicate specimens, and collection intensity over the years. As we move to digitized herbarium specimens, more attention should be paid to the ease of the search process and ways to collate search results between different institutions.
