Systematics Section/ASPT Ortiz, Rosa [1]. Systematics of Curarea Barneby & Krukoff (Menispermaceae) and a multivariate analysis of the Curarea toxicofera (Wedd.) Barney & Krukoff complex. The genus Curarea Barneby & Krukoff, is a netropical genus in the family Menispermaceae. As currently circumscribed, the genus is monophyletic and includes five described species. While the genus is widely distributed from Costa Rica to the Atlantic coast in Brazil, most species have a more localized distribution such as to the Amazon basin, to the Atlantic forest in Brazil, the Guianas, and to the Choco biogeographic region. For the most part, the species exhibit patterns of morphological variation that parallels their geographic distribution with the exception of Curarea toxicofera (Wedd.) Barneby & Krukoff. Here, I re-evaluate the taxonomic limits of Curarea species with emphasis in C. toxicofera complex by using multivariate análisis of selected morphological features from about 70 herbarium specimens. Preliminary results indicate that at least three entities are found within the C. toxicofera complex. These entities exhibit distinctive morphological characters despite overlapping range of variation and likely represent distinct species. They will be formally recognized as such within the genus Curarea pending further analyses. Broader Impacts:
